Julio C. Ayala was taken into custody on Saturday.

An 18-year-old Brooklyn man accused of raping an 11-year-old girl was brought into custody on Saturday after leading police on a brief foot chase. Julio C. Ayala of Brooklyn is accused of removing an air conditioner from a second-floor window in  Prospect-Lefferts Gardens before breaking inside, climbing onto the top bunk of a bed and brutally raping an 11-year-old girl. Prosecutors said on Sunday that the victim’s brother was asleep on the bottom bunk during the rape, according to the New York Post. When police arrived to locate and take the rumored gang member into custody, Ayala attempted to flee out of a window at his home. He ran on foot and tried to hide at a nearby construction site, where police captured him. As Ayala was cuffed and arrested, Brooklyn neighbors began to cheer, happy the accused Brooklyn rapist was being taken away by authorities. Ayala reportedly appeared in court looking unaffected and without much emotion, per NBC New York. He was charged with rape, sex-motivated burglary, criminal sexual act, sexual abuse and acting in a manner injurious to a child, the NYPD stated. Ayala did admit to being in the victim’s bedroom, telling authorities he had never done anything like that before. The prosecutor shared that the Brooklyn man, who left his Bulls hat behind at the scene of the crime, had a forged green card and Social Security card. Prior to his arrest, Ayala was living with his aunt, uncle and two cousins in Brooklyn and worked at his uncle’s airconditioner repair shop. The Brooklyn man’s defense attorney stated that he is not a flight risk because of his ties to the community, but authorities believe he is a member of the international crime gang MS-13. Ayala’s defense attorney argued that this was a mistaken ID.  Ayala’s bail was set at $500,000. He is due back in court for Sept. 7.
