The mission of MCNY’s Master of Public Administration program in public affairs and administration is to educate those who are or will be leaders and administrators of public and nonprofit organizations in New York City and its metropolitan area. MPA in Emergency and Disaster Management (Online)

The Master of Public Administration in Emergency and Disaster Management (MPA-EDM-DST) via distance learning provides a dynamic, market-driven education.

The coursework examines current theory and purifies it in the crucible of best practices in the industry, while addressing all aspects of the disaster management cycle. The MPA-EDM-DST program is designed to cover a wide range of topics, including climate change impacts, social vulnerabilities to disasters, enterprise risk management, cybersecurity, economics of disasters, humanitarian response to disasters, and counterterrorism.

The program caters to students who balance work and family responsibilities: It allows flexibility in scheduling, while maintaining a personal connection to the campus, other students, and our distinguished faculty Students can complete the MPA-EDM-DST online in 12 months, as a full-time student. The program requires 45 credits of coursework and is organized into three, 14-week semesters. Each semester is comprised of two, seven-week sessions. As part of the coursework, students must complete a 3-semester project, or Constructive Action (CA). The CA is split into three parts, and students work with a single faculty member who helps them with the project throughout the year.

Before graduating, students are required to present and defend their CA to a group of MPA-EDM faculty members at the Manhattan campus, or via a webcast.

During the month of June in each academic year, the program will hold a five day on-site residency at the MCNY Manhattan Campus. This will be coordinated with the college’s annual commencement. This will provide the opportunity for the online degree participants to formally receive their degree with the entire community of graduating students at MCNY.

A highly specialized degree that covers the planning, management, logistics, response, relief, recovery and economics associated with managing emergency situations, you can complete this accelerated, accredited program in just 12 months.

This program will allow you to:

  • Focus on significant issues in emergency management and homeland security including public health, terrorism, disaster management, economics and the role of federal and state governments.
  • Participate in internships at various public and private agencies including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the NYC Office of Emergency Management (OEM).
  • Integrate classroom theory and practical, hands-on, experiential knowledge throughout your four semesters of study

International Field Study

The intensive 10-day Study Abroad component of MCNY’s Emergency and Disaster Management MPA program is an action-oriented immersive experience—included with program tuition. Designed to ensure that students have the opportunity to work collaboratively in a pan-cultural environment and learn from their international peers. During past study abroad trips, MCNY students have traveled to Turkey, Chile, Spain, and other countries.

The field study portion of the program sometimes requires students to attend classes, meetings, or take conference calls during non-class hours. It might also require that presentations are given to executives and professionals and students should be appropriately prepared for such. All scheduling is dependent upon the agency or organization that the class is working with and what their class project entails.
